CONTEMPORARY ASIAN STUDIES

will start in the Spring 2010.

The College of Humanities: at the crossroads...

The College of Humanities (CDH) is a place of convergence of the human and social sciences (SHS)  that are taught to all Bachelor and Master students of EPFL. Since it was created in 2004, it  has contributed to developing the intellectual, critical and pragmatic skills that are associated with social and human sciences(SHS), but that need to be developed at the high level of the EPFL studies.  With openmindedness it manages and coordinates a range of interdisciplinary courses that can be useful to the future graduates of EPFL.

Both diverse and coherent, the SHS teaching program mobilises a very wide range of social and human sciences  on  different fields of study related to the production of knowledge, the organisation of society, the cultural and artistic productions, as well as to social and human dimensions of technical, scientific and entrepreneurial professions.

At present the teaching staff of the CDH brings together over sixty members (professors, maîtres d'enseignement et de recherche, maîtres-assistants and assistants) who for the most part belong to the University of Lausanne, but also to EPFL and to other partner institutions such as the University of Geneva, the University of Art and Design Lausanne and the Geneva University of Art and Design.

The CDH is equally developing other teaching programs in the field of Area Studies. As from  the academic year 2009-2010, a minor in Contemporary Asian Studies is offered to the students of EPFL who would like to gain better knowledge of this geographical, social and cultural area that is of major importance nowadays.

Last the CDH promotes the development of research in the fields in which social and human sciences interact with engineering and other sciences studied in EPFL.
